Second dachshund adopts tiger cub after first one run over

A tiger cub rejected by its mother at a zoo in Germany experienced another tragedy on Tuesday, as the Dachshund that had been looking after it was run over by a local postman.

The as yet unnamed female cub was born over the weekend at the nature park in Stroehen, in the northern state of Lower Saxony.

When its keepers discovered the little tiger had been abandoned by its mother, they decided to hand-rear it. But they also set out to find an adoptive four-legged parent to keep the tiger company. A suitable candidate was soon found.

A miniature wire-haired Dachshund called Monster turned out to be anything but a monster as it displayed fatherly feelings for the little cub, keeping it warm in its basket and giving it tender loving care.

Disaster struck early on Tuesday, however, when Monster was run over by the local postman.

Luckily, a perfect replacement was soon found - Monster's daughter, Bessie, who is now the proud adoptive parent of the little tiger cub.
