Man trying to fix airbed blows up apartment

A German man who attempted to fix a hole in his airbed caused an explosion on Tuesday. A spark from the electric pump ignited some solvent and blew up his apartment.

A man inadvertently blew up his apartment while he was attempting to repair a leaky airbed. The 45-year-old, who lives in the western German city of Düsseldorf, saw his DIY attempt end in disaster on Tuesday, leaving both him and a three-year-old girl with burns.

The man had applied tyre repair solvent to a hole in the mattress and left it overnight. When he went to inflate it the next day, a spark from the electric air pump ignited it, the local fire brigade told reporters.

The blast was so strong that it pushed the living-room wall into the building's stairwell and caused extensive damage to the apartment, blowing out windows and wrecking furniture.

"The apartment looked devastated," a spokesperson for the fire brigade said. Fire fighters evacuated 23 people from his and the neighboring building and the police blocked off the street in order to make sure there was no structural damage.

The damage is estimated to be worth some €20,000 ($28,000) and the man is to be investigated for causing an explosion through negligence.
