Pensioner arrested for murder after 'boat rage' attack

A pensioner has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a suspected "boat rage" attack on a canal barge.

Ambulance crews were called to the Lancaster Canal near the Th'Owd Tithe Barn pub in Garstang, Lancs following reports of an assault.

David Tweddle, 56, from Carlisle, was found on a barge and despite desperate attempts to revive him he was pronounced dead at the scene on Wednesday night. He is believed to have died following an altercation with another boater on the canal over mooring rights.

Witnesses said the victim, who was on a holiday break with his wife, became involved in a scuffle after his cruiser, Whisper, was hit by a narrowboat.

The boaters are said to have exchanged heated words and punches shortly before the man died - but it is not known exactly what caused his death.

Police arrested a 72-year-old man from Blackpool close to the scene and he is currently being questioned by detectives at Lancaster Police Station.
