Couple helped at sea days after pet dog saved in cliff fall

A couple have been rescued from the sea three days after their pet dog was saved following a cliff fall at Moelfre on Anglesey. Three-year-old Scrappy plunged 40ft (12 m) while walking on Monday with his family from Blackpool.

But just three days later his owners, a 35-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man, were swept out to sea in their inflatable dinghy by strong winds. The couple were unhurt, but the RNLI said they were not wearing lifejackets.

The RNLI said the dinghy had no line attached and the pair aboard were wearing shorts and t-shirts. They were both cold and the woman received first aid from paramedics, but she was not seriously hurt.

The Moelfre inshore lifeboat was launched after the couple were seen to be in trouble off nearby Lligwy beach. The woman jumped into the water and was in the sea for 30 minutes until she was picked up by a passing boat.

Her partner was taken aboard the lifeboat and was brought ashore with the couple's dinghy. An RNLI spokesman said inflatable dinghies were dangerous at sea, particularly in windy conditions.

He added it was a remarkable coincidence Moelfre lifeboat had gone to the family's aid twice during their holiday.
