Shrine set up for doomed postbox

A postbox in Bristol has been turned into a shrine by people upset about a decision to remove it.

The pillar box in Bedminster, which is being taken away because of attacks by vandals, has been covered in flowers and "rest in peace" cards.

A passage from WH Auden's poem, Night Mail, has been also been attached to the postbox, along with a crucifix.



Whoever is behind the shrine has remained anonymous but residents said a memorial ceremony took place on Sunday.

The passage from the Auden poem reads: "And no-one will hear the postman's knock/Without a quickening of the heart. For who can bear to feel himself forgotten?"

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said there were other pillar boxes near the one about to be removed, which is on the corner of Fraser Street and Windmill Hill.
