A conman used a cloned card to buy £3,000 worth of petrol at the same West Midlands petrol station over six days.
Police said he used the bogus fuel card at the BP Supermart Petrol Station at the junction of Willenhall and Moseley Roads, Bilston, at least 40 times.
He also offered motorists in Birmingham the chance to top-up with discounted fuel, leading a convoy of interested drivers to the filling station.
Pc Steve Gwynne, from Bilston police station, said the man told attendants at the petrol station he ran a car hire firm and preferred to fill up his fleet's tanks overnight. He would meet motorists in Coventry Road, Birmingham, and offer them half-price fuel.
"The car owners accompanied the man to the petrol station. The male would then fill their vehicles with fuel and pay using the cloned card. The car owners paid the man half the value of the fuel dispensed," Pc Gwynne said.
Detectives said the man was of Asian appearance, aged in his late 30s, described as of heavy build with a black goatee beard.
