Man injured while breaking into jail

A convicted killer was seriously hurt while trying to break into the Brevard County Jail.

Sylvester Jiles was released from the jail on Friday after being sentenced to eight years probation in the 2007 shooting death of Dustin Prouse. The state said shakey witnesses lead to a plea deal. On Monday, Jiles demanded to be booked again for his own protection.

Authorities said Jiles told them people were threatening his life. When they refused to allow him back inside, Jiles climbed a barbed-wire fence and then tried to climb through razor wire. Investigators said he fell through three layers of the wire.

"He came over the top of the fence and fell down with all of his body weight through three layers of that and suffered some pretty serious cuts to his body," Brevard County Sheriff's Office Maj. Greg Purden said.

The mother of the man Jiles admitted to killing said no one in her family threatened him. "We just want him back in prison we don't want to wish death on him," Linda Jinks said. "We don't want them to go through what we've been through in the last two and half years."

Officials said Jiles appeared to have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Toxicology tests were expected to be completed.
