Security guard gets stuck in bog while relieving himself

David Wilkinson, 38, became stuck after walking into some undergrowth in a field to relieve himself, but stepped into the natural bog and began sinking. As he was sucked waist-deep into the mud he used the last of his mobile phone battery to call his partner, who then rang the emergency services.

But despite repeatedly shouting for help he had to wait two-and-a-half hours before he was found and hauled to safety. Mr Wilkinson, from St Paul's, Bristol, says he could have suffered serious harm if his shouts had not been heard.

"I stopped to answer the call of nature and within a minute or so my feet were stuck in the mud and I couldn't move," he said. "I thought 'I'm in a bit of trouble here', and I rang my partner Lisa on my mobile phone and told her what was happening.

"She thought I was joking at first, but she realised I was serious. Within five minutes I was up to my waist. It was sucking me in. I can laugh about it now but at the time it was not so funny. If it had not been for the DHL guy I doubt anybody would have heard my shouts."

Mr Wilkinson became stuck in mud on a patch of wasteland near Smoke Lane and used the last of his mobile phone battery to call partner Lisa Gavin, 38, for help. She dialled 999 but could not give an exact location to firefighters who were joined in the search for Mr Wilkinson by his concerned colleagues.

As the light faded a DHL worker heard his cries for help before firefighters put a ladder across the marshy ground and tied a line around his waist. They then dug out the mud around his waist before using a high-pressure hose to release him at around 7.30pm.
