Bob Dylan releases Christmas album

The times really are a-changin’ when the bard of Sixties rebellion makes a Christmas album.

Normally the preserve of treacly boy bands and grandmas’ favourites in comfortable knitwear, an album of seasonal songs and carols by Bob Dylan was released by Sony yesterday.

Christmas in the Heart features Dylan applying his unique growl and whine to 15 songs. None are written by him – the album features popular tracks from the 1940s and Fifties that would have dominated the December airwaves when Dylan was growing up as Robert Zimmerman in Minnesota; songs such as Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Here Comes Santa and Winter Wonderland.

There are also four traditional carols in The First Noel, Hark! the Herald Angels Sing, O Come, All Ye Faithful and O Little Town of Bethlehem.

All royalties from record sales will go to charity. Money from US sales will be donated to Feeding America and proceeds from worldwide sales go to other hunger charities.

Dylan has said: "It's a tragedy that more than 35 million people in this country alone — 12 million of those children — often go to bed hungry and wake up each morning unsure of where their next meal is coming from. I join the good people of Feeding America in the hope that our efforts can bring some food security to people in need during this holiday season."
