Callous drivers ignore injured woman

A woman is fighting for her life in an Australian hospital after she was run over when she jumped from a moving car during a dispute with her boyfriend. The 37-year-old woman climbed out the passenger window to escape but fell under the back wheel of the couple's four-wheel-drive.

Security footage of the incident shows the woman being dragged along for several metres before being run over. Police have now launched an appeal for witnesses. The driver does a U-turn before getting out of his car and running over to the woman. He then moves her off the road on to the footpath before driving off.

As the woman lies motionless on the ground, two cars can be seen driving slowly past, looking at the woman, and then driving off. The accident happened as the Toyota Prado turned off University Avenue and on to Palmerston Circuit in Palmerston CBD about 4.30pm on Monday.

The woman was rushed to Royal Darwin Hospital by St John Ambulance with serious head injuries and following tests on arrival she was put in an induced coma.

The 30-year-old driver was arrested and charged with recklessly endangering life. Police said he is remorseful and visited her in hospital yesterday.

Casuarina Police Detective Sergeant Len Turner said the woman was not threatened and was not trying to flee the car in fear of her life. "It seems, as a result of a domestic argument, she has attempted to get out of the car through the window,'' he said. "She has hung on to the car for a while from the outside while it was still moving but then fell and went under the car and was run over.''
