Officials say insulting sign can stay

Stonington officials say a local couple doesn't have to take down a 100-square-foot sign with giant "F" and "U" on it, that's directed at neighbours they've feuded with.

The town's zoning enforcement officer sent a violation notice to the couple, Carol Holt and Thompson Wyper, last week. But the town attorney now says the regulations cited in the notice don't apply.

The sign is on a shed facing the home of James and Thomasine O'Boyle, with whom Holt and Wyper have had property and zoning disputes.

Barely visible next to the "F" and "U" on the sign are letters that spell out "Follow Us." Holt has said the sign is actually a work of art, but the O'Boyles say the message is clear.

There's a news video here.
