A senior police officer in Derbyshire has offered an "unreserved" apology after more than 100 bottles of urine were left near a public footpath.
Officers discovered the bottles at a house at Waingroves, near Codnor, during an arrest.
They were placed in a nearby field for collection on 27 September but not picked up until some time later.
Supt Gary Parkin said the bottles posed a problem and should not have been left at the scene.
Mr Parkin said: "I would like to make a public apology to all the residents who have been subjected to the sight and smell of these bottles. They should not have been left there."
A spokeswoman said as soon as police became aware the bottles had not been removed, officers employed a company to clear them from the area.
