'Stupid' man told he must behave

A man branded "unbelievably stupid" by a sheriff for throwing a sandbag from a bridge in Edinburgh onto the road below has been ordered to behave for a year. Luke Scott, 24, dumped the bag off the city's North Bridge after a night out, Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard. A taxi driver on Market Street parked partially under the bridge, at 0200 GMT heard a "loud thump".

Scott admitted culpably and recklessly throwing a bag from North Bridge to the danger of the public, on 26 March 2009. Fiscal depute Malcolm Stewart said: "When he looked out he saw a sandbag lying at the nearside next to his taxi. He looked up and could see Scott looking over the parapet and laughing." The court heard the taxi driver called police who then found Scott sitting in a bus stop.

Mr Stewart told the court Scott admitted what he had done and when officers asked him why, he said: "I don't know, it was a stupid thing to do." Sheriff Celia Sanderson told Scott he had been "unbelievably stupid". She added: "This is possibly one of the most stupid things I have ever heard of. I regard this very seriously."

Sheriff Sanderson said she had deferred sentence on Scott, from Edinburgh, because she was concerned he did not realise how serious the charge he faced was. She added that she put the offence down to immaturity and stupidity and ordered him to stay out of trouble for the next year.
