98-year-old woman charged with murder of 100-year-old roomate

Authorities are charging a 98-year-old woman with strangling her 100-year-old roommate in a nursing home. She is believed to be the oldest murder defendant in Massachusetts history.

Laura Lundquist, 98, was indicted on Friday for second-degree murder. The victim Elizabeth Barrow shared a room with Lundquist at the Brandon Woods Nursing Home in Dartmouth, MA.

According to published reports Barrow was found dead with a plastic bag tied around her head on Sept. 24th. Originally believed to be a suicide an autopsy revealed she died of strangulation and suffocation.

Reportedly the two elderly woman had been involved in a heated argument over a table Lundquist had placed near barrow's bed. Lundquist became convinced the woman was taking over their room.

However because of Lundquist's mental health she may never face trial. She is reported to suffer from dementia and cognitive impairment.

A spokesman for the nursing home said the option existed to change either of their rooms twice but Barrow declined. The spokesman went on to say that the women were like "sisters," and frequently took walks and told each other they cared for each other.
