Bin saves the bacon of group on the run from wild boars

A large rubbish container saved the lives of four people in Germany when they dived into the refuse to save themselves from a marauding pack of wild boars.

The tuskers charged them in woodland outside Darmstadt in the early hours of Sunday as they came home after a party.

The two men and two women ran for 100 yards with the boars gaining ground on them before they found sanctuary in the container.

Once inside the refuge, one of the men was able to dial the police emergency line. "We're up to our necks in s**t and the beasts are outside," he said. "You've got to get us out of here."

However, by the time police arrived, the boars had gone. A spokesman added: "They can be very aggressive and certainly life-threatening."

Germany's wild boar population has exploded in recent years, as a result of mild winters and stricter hunting rules. Barely a week goes by without fresh instances of wild-boar attacks.
