Couple finds drunken stranger on their couch cuddling teddy bear

A St. Martin couple was shocked when they awoke Saturday night to a drunken stranger asleep on their couch, cuddling a teddy bear.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said Christopher Paul Silga, of St. Martin, was charged with trespassing and driving under the influence. "It appears he just walked in the front door of the house," Byrd said. "He thought he was at his girlfriend's house in Gautier."

"The homeowners asked (Silga) who he was and what he was doing in their house when they found him passed out," Byrd said. "They said he was clearly intoxicated and spaced out." The couple asked Silga to leave and he drove away from their Eagle Pine Street home in a dark blue Chevrolet Silverado.

Sheriff's Deputies caught up to Silga on Beachview Drive and tried to pull him over. "He was driving recklessly," Byrd said. "He was weaving and jerking the steering wheel to his vehicle."

Byrd said at one point Silga ploughed down a row of mailboxes. "They finally got him to stop on the corner of North 4th Street and Marina Drive," Byrd said. The officer could smell an intoxicating odor as soon as Silga began to talk."

Byrd said the deputy asked if Silga had been drinking and he said, "I've been at the Beau Rivage and only had two Crown (Royal) and cokes, but they were big ones." Byrd said it's unclear what Silga's blood alcohol content was because he refused a breath analyzer test and opted to go to jail.
