Driverless car surprises New Zealand police

Police manning a drink drive checkpoint in Christchurch were surprised to see a vehicle coming towards them with no-one in the driver's seat.

Inspector Al Stewart says it appears the driver had seen police and jumped into the rear seat while his female front-seat passenger tried to get hold of the wheel. Once stopped, the driver blew a positive test for alcohol.

The officers got another surprise when they went to impound the vehicle and found that one of the driver's friends hiding in the boot.

Inspector Stewart says he had apparently just gone along for the ride but can only imagine what would have happened if he'd been left there while the car was in a pound for 28 days.
