'Hurt' husband drove into church

A man has been jailed for 10 months after driving through the doors of the Black Country church in which he was married after his relationship failed.

Robert Knowles, 36, of Stourdell Road, Halesowen, caused £25,000 damage to the Flame Community Church in Rowley Regis, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.

Knowles, who admitted criminal damage, told officers "my wife doesn't want to know me" when he was arrested. He was also disqualified from driving for a year.

Knowles left his car embedded in a stage at the church after causing the damage in July, Judge John Wait was told.

He had driven down the aisle of the church and ruined flooring, carpets and caused some flooding as his Vauxhall ripped radiators off the wall, the court heard. He was arrested the following day.

Sally Cairns, defending, told the court that Knowles felt hurt and rage after being told by his wife of two years that there was no chance of a reconciliation. Judge Wait told Knowles he had caused a great deal of hurt and distress and he knew the church played a big part in the lives of many people.
