Kitten rescued from eave of building

Stuckey, the small black kitten that was rescued from the eave of a maintenance building at the Indian River fairgrounds last week, is making progress.

The 2-pound kitten had her head wedged in a 1½-inch round hole in the eave of a maintenance shed belonging to the Indian River Soccer Association. From the cat’s condition, Humane Society officials concluded that she had been stuck for several days without food or water. The cat was in shock when she was found, with a dangerously low body temperature.

Daniel, Indian River County Animal Control Officer Eric Hummel, and the shelter’s maintenance technician Eddie Crowley removed a board from the side of the building and freed the animal using a handsaw.

“As compromised as she was, she knew we were trying to help her,” said Daniel. “And she’s been purring ever since she got here.”

Janet Winikoff, education director for the humane society, said the cat is still suffering from neurological problems in her right eye and is being treated with eye drops four times a day. The medication keeps the eye lubricated and the kitten does not appear to be blind, she said.

The one thing that definitely has improved during the past week is the kitten’s appetite. Winikoff said Stuckey’s appetite is now voracious. “She likes to eat, that’s for sure,” said Winikoff.
