Auctioned toenail sells for $61 - Update

A toenail being auctioned for charity in New Zealand attracted 25,347 views, but managed to extract just $61 from bidders when the auction closed.

The proceeds were to be donated to the Hawera Salvation Army, to buy supplies for its food bank. It was billed as a "good honest Kiwi Male nail" measuring 12mm long by 11mm wide - "That's 132 sq mm prime real estate".

Its former owner said he had worn through the ends of a few socks during the its cultivation but had still managed to get about wearing shoes.

The sale prompted a huge number of questions and comments, mostly positive, although a couple voiced concerns about the potential to transfer athlete's foot.
