A Wallingford man was arrested on Saturday after his 2-year-old daughter was found wandering unattended on North 50th Street with his glass marijuana pipe in her play purse. The girl "was wearing only a pyjama top and no shoes, no socks, no pants or undergarments," Officer Chet Decker wrote in a police incident report. "She also had a live rabbit, a family pet with her."
Police also found an empty prescription bottle of a pain reliever in the girl's bright pink-and-orange purse. People walking in the area of 50th and Wallingford Avenue North found her and called officers. She was allegedly wandering for at least eight minutes before her father came outside and found her in the street.
Police said the girl's mother let out the family's dogs and left the door unlocked. The girl wandered out the backdoor. Her parents said they were asleep when the 2-year-old walked outside about noon.
The girl's parents said "(she) was not wearing adequate clothing because she is potty training and often takes her clothes off in the house," Decker wrote. The temperature was 43 degrees.
The father told police she must have found the pipe outside, but later allegedly said he used the pipe to smoke marijuana the night before and left it on the back porch. His name was also on the prescription bottle, which he was taking for dental surgery he recently had, according to the report.
Medics responded, but determined the girl did not need additional medical treatment. The father was released from the North Precinct after his arrest, and the pipe allegedly tested positive for 0.2 grams of marijuana. The 2-year-old girl was released to her mother. The child does not have her own bed for sleeping in, but "is otherwise well cared for and lives in sanitary conditions," Decker wrote.
