Man bashed over head with didgeridoo

A young man smacked his girlfriend's father over the head with a didgeridoo because the older man kept trying to split the couple up, an Australian court was told.

Stafford Barry Cedric, 25, was placed on probation for one year in Cairns Magistrates’ Court yesterday after pleading guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm while armed with a didgeridoo on October 29 last year.

His victim suffered a 5cm gash to the top of his head from the attack and needed six staples to treat the wound.

Defence solicitor Steve Carter said his client "snapped" after his girlfriend’s father had again come to their Mooroobool home drunk and demanding that his daughter, who is 18, come home with him. Magistrate Suzette Coates told Cedric he should find other ways to deal with the problem, including perhaps taking out a restraining order against the father.
