Passengers saved from Chinese train buried in snow

Rescue workers in Inner Mongolia have saved 1,400 passengers from a train buried in deep snow, as northern China is hit by its heaviest snowfall in six decades.

The train from Harbin to Baotou was trapped for more than 30 hours after ploughing into a drift more than two metres high near Jining on Sunday.

All 15 carriages were buried and passengers stranded inside without lighting or heating, and supplies of food and drinking water rapidly running out.

The snow delayed 13 passenger trains in Inner Mongolia, and forced the closure of all four airports in Shandong, as well as 30 state highways in northern China.
