Sex-assault accused tells of bizarre patient behaviour

A staff nurse accused of sexual assaults has told jurors how patients recovering from anaesthetic can display bizarre behaviour.

Gavin Nicholson denies groping women as they recovered from surgery at the Washington Spire Hospital, Sunderland, between March 2007 and September 2008. He on trial at Newcastle Crown Court.

The 56-year-old's defence team claim the women may have "entirely false beliefs" about what happened to them because of the effects of anaesthetic.

Nicholson, of West Avenue, Harraton, Washington, told police he had witnessed some of the unusual actions of patients as they wake up.

He said a 19-stone man woke up asking for a hug, and a woman patient asked Nicholson why he had not given her a kiss the night before.

From the witness box yesterday he gave more details of weird behaviour he has witnessed in the recovery room. He said; "I have had people waking up and I have had to restrain them. I have had men waking up in tears, there is a wide range of reactions to anaesthetic." The case is proceeding.
