"By the time I got there, the cat was on top of my dog and I just swung once and hit it kind of in the shoulder and I put my arms up and yelled and it took off running," said Marquel Dawson.
Dawson, 19, said he was playing with his pit bull, German shepherd mix when the mountain lion attacked. Dawson says the dog fought back fiercely, but he knew it needed help. So he ran to his nearby home, got the sword out of his garage, and ran back to help his dog.
A veterinarian describes the dog's injuries as minor, considering what it was up against. Dawson says he does not think the mountain lion was badly hurt either.
