Prisoner installed safe to preserve possessions in jail

A prisoner took crime prevention advice to heart by putting a safe in his cell to protect his valuables from fellow inmates who might have been tempted to do a little thieving. The safe was found during searches at Kennet prison near Liverpool and confiscated by staff. In another cell, officers at the 334-inmate jail found a tattoo machine along with needles, ink and tattoo patterns.

The safe and the tattoo machine were among drugs, pornographic DVDs and games consoles confiscated from jails in England and Wales, according to information released under freedom of information laws.

Pornographic DVDs were confiscated at Dorchester, Liverpool and Kennet jails, and hardcore pornography was seized at Wakefield prison after being sent to an inmate through the post.

In December officers at Ford open jail in Sussex seized a digital set-top box, a CD player, a DVD player, 27 mobile phones, 26 mobile phone chargers, two PlayStation 2 players and seven PlayStation games.
