Thieves steal hearse with body leaving note so corpse could be found

A hearse was stolen on Wednesday morning from a crematorium on Lake Court with a body still inside the car. Police were called for a car blocking a driveway on E. 55th Street.

When police arrived, they ran the licence plates on the black 2009 Chrysler Town & Country station wagon and found out that the car was stolen from a crematorium. Police contacted the Schulte Mahon Murphy Funeral Home in Lyndhurst and were told that a body should be inside the car.

There was no body in the hearse but a note was discovered, telling authorities where the body could be found. Police and funeral home officials located the body, a woman's body still in a body bag and gurney, at Ashland Road and Trivoli Court.

The body was removed by Schulte Mahon Murphy employees. No suspects have been arrested at this time.
