Pedestrians were horrified to see the passenger in the VW Golf wind down the window, hang the dingy outside, then start blowing it up as the driver cruised along a busy main road. The dinghy was inflated to full capacity before it began flapping in the wind and narrowly missed people on the pavement.
A motorcyclist was so shocked he filmed the incident along the A5 in Llangollen, in Denbighshire, north Wales, using a video camera fitted to his helmet. North Wales Police said they are studying the footage and could prosecute for dangerous driving. Motorcycle instructor Nigel Bowers, a 52-year old retired policeman, from Staffordshire, filmed the incident on May 22.
He said: ‘I was utterly shocked at what I saw and couldn’t believe how irresponsible the people were. I had been out training and I had the cameras on and when I saw the car I couldn’t resist following it. I couldn’t believe my eyes. At first, from distance, I thought it was a parasol, but as it got larger I realised it was a dinghy.
‘There are a couple of points where they pass pedestrians and they do come close to knocking them over.’ A spokeswoman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said: ‘Why anybody would want to do this is beyond us.’
