Thieves steal tiger and camels by accident

A thief that made off with a truck may find he bit off more than he could chew when he opens up the attached trailer. Sureté du Québec spent most of Friday searching for the stolen truck and trailer containing a tiger and two camels from the Bowmanville Zoo.

Zoo director Michael Hackenberger told the Sun the animals were inside a trailer on their way back to Ontario from the Maritimes when the two attendants stopped to sleep an hour east of Montreal. Hackenberger said the attendants gave the animals water around 11 p.m. Thursday in Saint-Liboire, Que. They checked on the animals at 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. When they checked again at 6:45 a.m., the truck, trailer and animals were gone.

“Apparently in that area they have had a spate of truck and trailer thefts,” Hackenberger said. “Right now our only concern is with the animals.” Zoo officials are worried if the animals don’t get water soon, they’ll be in serious medical distress or could die.

Hackenberger said they are also concerned how the thieves will react to the animals. The two five-year-old camels, named Sean and Todd, are very calm animals often used for riding, he said. Jonas the tiger, 3, is trained and shouldn’t be a danger to the public or the camels because he is locked in a separate cage inside the trailer, Hackenberger said. “He’s not going to get out and hurt anyone,” he stressed.
