A man has admitted an act of domestic violence after launching a meat pie into his girlfriend’s face. Charles Coxon, 35, of Shakespeare Road, Burton, gave his partner a nose bleed by throwing the frozen pie into her face following a late-night row. Geoff Gibson, prosecuting, told Burton Magistrates’ Court: “Before the incident, the defendant and the injured party were in a long-term relationship with one another.
“On the night of the incident in question, they had been out to a public house together for a drink. While they were there, an argument had broken out over trivial matters.” He added: “The argument was still unresolved as the two returned home. During the argument the defendant entered the kitchen to prepare himself a meat pie. While he was preparing it, the defendant pushed the pie into the injured party’s face, giving her a nose bleed. After this, he followed her upstairs and pushed her onto the bed, hurting her chest in the process.” The victim, Yvonne Jasinsky, sat at the back of the courtroom throughout the hearing and made no eye contact with the defendant.
Coxon, who was unrepresented in court, said his police statement was an exact account of the events. He denied punching the victim and several other claims made by the prosecution, although he pleaded guilty to assault by beating. After both sides presented their cases, the magistrates decided a pre-sentencing report was necessary.
Vivian Patterson, chairman of the bench, said: “This court takes all matters of domestic violence extremely seriously. We will not be able to sentence today, therefore we will ask for an all-options probation report to be compiled.” Coxon will be back in court for sentencing on July 30. Until then he answers bail on the conditions that he has no contact with the victim and does not visit her house.
