Man gets stuck in wall trying to escape fire

An Oregon man is safe after becoming stuck in a wall while his house was on fire. He was apparently trying to break through the drywall to escape the flames. "I was trying to get through that wall, I'm halfway through the wall," he said during a phone call to the Keizer Fire Dispatch Center. It's a 911 call dispatchers will not soon forget, as Mike Hall described getting stuck in this hole.

His wife, Tammy, says it all started last night when her husband was making tater tots for dinner. After plugging in the deep fryer, Mike ran to the bathroom. "Does anybody unplug everything when they go to the bathroom?" Tammy asked. When Mike opened the door, Tammy says all he saw was thick black smoke, so closed the door and called 911. "He honestly told me that he didn't think he had much time left in that bathroom because he could feel the heat," Tammy said.

In an effort to escape, Mike began kicking through the dry wall and tried to climb to the next room. But it didn't go according to plan. He got stuck. "I can honestly say that I've never heard of anything quite like this one," dispatcher Anne-Marie Penge admitted.

When firefighters arrived they got a shock. "There was this gentleman stuck halfway through the wall, his head into another room, and his legs and lower body was still in the bathroom," Penge said, describing what rescuers discovered. Firefighters broke down more dry wall to pull Mike to safety.
