Onlookers claim that the defiant pensioner was rude to attending police officers as they quizzed him about the couple’s conduct. The pair were arrested on suspicion of being involved in an act of outraging public decency. The woman, from Redhill, Surrey, and the pensioner, believed to be from the Derby area, were questioned by officers at Newport Police Station.

They were bailed until September 26 pending further enquiries. Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward. A Hampshire Police spokesman said: “An indecent act was reported on the beach at Shanklin Esplanade on the Isle of Wight.
“Officers were called at 3.50pm on Sunday following concerns expressed by members of the public about two people, who appeared to be involved in a sexual act on the beach. Investigating officers would like to speak with members of the public who were on Shanklin beach on Sunday afternoon. Several witnesses left the scene without passing on their contact details to the police.”
