Pantsless swordsman arrested after long standoff

Police in Hoquiam, Washington, arrested a man who was walking outside his house without pants while carrying a sword and yelling at neighbours on Thursday evening. Deputy Chief Jim Maloney said the incident began at about 7:20 p.m. when officers were called to the 42-year-old man's home in the 1800 block of Broadway. A neighbour told officers the half-nude man yelled "you shoot me I'll fight you with steel or a sword!" before going back inside.

Another witness said the man was swinging the two-foot sword at the side of his home and yelling at anyone who passed by. Officers spent several hours negotiating with the man and at about 10:48 p.m. kicked in the front door while the man was showing his art work through a lower window to other officers, Maloney said.

The man ran into a laundry room and an officer shot him with a bean bag gun, breaking the man's arm. Police said the man continued to fight back and officers shot him with a Taser to get him under control. Asked later about being shot with the bean bag, the man told police "I don't know, it didn't hurt."

Maloney said that as the man was being taken from the house, he repeatedly yelled "You weren't supposed to bean bag me, you were supposed to shoot me in the head so I could go to heaven!" The man was treated at Community Hospital and will undergo a mental health evaluation. Maloney said officers found three swords, a pellet rifle and 29 marijuana plants when they searched the man's home.
