Dead animal found in medical office filing cabinet

Staff at a medical office made a nasty discovery on Thursday. Workers at Functional Medical Specialists, a weight loss centre in Colorado Springs, noticed a strong stench and soon found the source was a dead animal stuffed in a filing cabinet. It's hard to tell what the animal is, but staff believe it's a dog or coyote. "We're most horrified by what happened to this animal," said James Abernathy, owner of Functional Medical Specialists. "That someone would be so cruel to dump it in a filing cabinet."

He said he considers what's happened a break-in, and believes the culprit may be a former employee. It's not clear if the animal was already dead, or killed specifically for the disturbing prank. Abernathy said he called police, and at first, officers seemed to take the situation seriously.

Sorry about the ad.

"We were told it was a crime scene," said Abernathy. "We were told they would handle this responsibly. [The officer] thought he could get animal control or the humane society to help determine what happened to the animal." He called on Friday to follow up, but he said the officer he talked to then said it would be too expensive to remove the dead animal. He said animal control also said it couldn't help.

"We understand that there are probably bigger and uglier issues going on in the city, but at the same time we were facing a very bizarre circumstance," said Abernathy. "It was the officer and their people that indicated this was a crime scene and yet they were ignoring it." He said if police or animal control won't do anything he'll pay for a private sanitation service to take away the animal.
