A South Florida man suffered a bite to his arm after rescuing an alligator on Sunday night. "I see an alligator in a canal with an arrowhead lodged in his head," said Alexander Alcantare.
The incident occurred near Fourth Street and Northwest 76th Avenue. Alcantare baited a hook and dragged the sharp toothed victim to shore. "I figured I'd trap it, you know, and see if I can get it some medical attention," he said. Alcantare is no animal doctor but rather an animal lover. Despite the alligator taking a bite out of his arm, he took the 7.5 foot patient home with him in hopes of saving its life.
Alcantare did all of this singled-handedly. The devout animal lover said, in the past, he lost half of his arm trying to save a bird's nest near a power line after being electrocuted. He said a Florida Power and Light worker had to perform CPR to save him. Alcantare called in the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission to help this time around. "The deal was they wouldn't euthanize it, take the arrow out and donate it to a park," he said.
The Good Samaritan is hailing himself a hero but said he is not so happy with his reward from FWC. "Well, somehow I ended up with a citation and I gotta get a permit for my raccoon," he said. FWC officials will most likely euthanize the gator because of its size and because it bit Alcantare.
