A drunk man impaled his groin on a five foot spike when he tried to take a short cut across a school after a night on the town.
The 40-year-old reveller was stuck fast for five hours on the school railings in Karvina-Mizerov, Czech Republic, until pupils found him there the next morning.
"He was suffering from hypothermia, which saved his life - because the cold weather slowed down the rate of his blood loss," said fire brigade spokesman Petr Kuda.
"It took a long time to cut him free as we had to be carful not to cause anymore damage to his wounded area," he added.
