Clayton County police Lt. Tina Daniel said the officer was sent to the neighbourhood after police received a call about a suspicious person in the area. Daniel said there had been at least one burglary in the area recently.
Daniel said the officer was patrolling the area on foot when the golden retriever, Boomer, jumped off a porch and began barking and running toward the officer. Daniel said the officer commanded the dog to stop, but it did not, so he shot and killed it. Family members said the dog was restrained by an electronic fence, but Daniel said there was no sign posted in the yard to indicate that.
She said it appeared the officer followed “proper protocol.” Boomer was owned by 19-year-old Jonathan King, family spokeswoman Anna King said. She said the dog was the family pet of a widow with six children. "I really feel like my friend was murdered in my front yard," Jonathan King said.

So, contrary to the headling, he didn't shoot the dog for barking at him, he shot it for barking and charging him. In short, for looking very much like it was going to attach him. I'd have shot it, too.

Blessed, sacred, holiest of HOLY, dogs can do no wrong, ever - regardless of what they actually do.
The dog was barking AND charging the cop; it did NOT obey commands; there is NO indication of an ALLEGED electronic fence. The cop would have been STUPID to NOT shot the STUPID dog.
The dog owners were stupidly irresponsible in not having adequate control of the dog –they clearly do not know how to look after a dog, and they should be denied the privilege of ever owning another dog.
Yes. Golden retrievers are so vicious. That's why they're used as police dogs and as lethal guard dogs. Every story about a dog mauling a child is about a golden retriever. /sarcasm
The ignorance and fear of dog-haters is far more scary to me. Police officers should be trained on how to deal with dogs, since they're going to encounter them many times in their careers. And if they're still so scared that they pull out their gun every time they see a dog, maybe they should choose a different profession.
L - as a matter of FACT - the largest number of insurance claims against dog owners involve golden retrievers. Typically they are do not maul or bite - the simply knock people over, and they get injured when they hit the ground - hips, knees, wrists, ribs, etc, get broken.
Golden retrievers are NOT very intelligent dogs - you can tell this by how they run up to people, and very often jump up on them - and KNOCK them over.
But, dog worshippers do NOT think this is a problem - people MUST adapt to their silly dogs. After all, the dog is too stupid to be trained or kept on a leash - and the dog is often far more intelligent than they their silly owner.
If someone is not capable of, or simply does not control their silly dog, they should NOT have control of that or any other dog -never, ever.
This cop was clearly justified in shooting the OUT-OF-CONTROL blessed, sacred, holiest of HOLY dog! The cop should get a medal for ridding t5he world of yet another out-of-control dog.
I am a die hard dog lover, particularly of golden retrievers but they are on the top 3 listed as frequent biters.
