Security cameras in a Chinese department store have caught the terrifying experience of one wheelchair-bound customer and her carer in Jiangsu province.
Customer service staff were shocked to see an out-of-control wheelchair plunging towards them down a steeply inclined travelator - with a carer hanging desperately from its handles.

The dogged carer suffered serious head injuries, but probably managed to slow the wheelchair enough to ensure the patient was not badly injured.
The travelators are designed to automatically brake specialised shopping carts used by the shop, but do not slow other wheeled devices, such as wheelchairs and buggies, that customers may bring in. Store managers have now installed signs warning customers not to bring such items onto the travelator.
