Five South Dakota lawmakers have introduced legislation that would require any adult 21 or older to buy a firearm “sufficient to provide for their ordinary self-defence.”
The bill, which would take effect Jan. 1, 2012, would give people six months to acquire a firearm after turning 21. The provision does not apply to people who are barred from owning a firearm. Nor does the measure specify what type of firearm. Instead, residents would pick one “suitable to their temperament, physical capacity, and preference.”
The measure is known as an act “to provide for an individual mandate to adult citizens to provide for the self defence of themselves and others.” Rep. Hal Wick, R-Sioux Falls, is sponsoring the bill and knows it will be killed. But he said he is introducing it to prove a point that the federal health care reform mandate passed last year is unconstitutional.
“Do I or the other cosponsors believe that the State of South Dakota can require citizens to buy firearms? Of course not. But at the same time, we do not believe the federal government can order every citizen to buy health insurance,” he said.

I still don't understand this line of thinking. Why do people in the US not want healthcare?
We want healthcare that is free to us... provided by employers or by the government, but magically not funded by taxes. And poor people should not have it. Because they haven't worked for it like I have.
*That's the best explanation I've been able to get from these types.
I'm with you Mark! If one political party is "allowed" to accomplish something, people from the other party are less likely to get re-elected.
South Dakota is overflowing with crazies, I'm so glad to be moving out of here this year.
here is the reasoning
the democrats wants us to buy health insurance because they know that the people do not want socialized medicine but when this fails the only option we will be trapped with is socialized medicine its all a chess game and the people that some call paranoid really only see things a couple moves ahead
congress only has the power to tax us they do not have the power to make us buy things
the thing is that they know a new tax to give everyone healthcare wont pass so they did this babystep that will end up leading to that anyway
Here's one American who would very much like to join the rest of the civilized world with "socialized" health care.
And here's one who'd not.
The ones who don't want it are currently healthy, or utterly demented.
A close friend of mine, in the States, is not only very limited by his insurance as to just how many times he can actually visit the hospital to get his MS and other problems checked out, but has also gone into debt so he can get that insurance in the first place.
The current American health 'care' system is murder. End it. The poor deserve treatment too.
Remember: You do not have the best in the world, you are ranked in 37th place in regards to health care, entirely because half your population can't get help.
Sponsoring a bill like this to make a point is insane. On the slim chance that it does go through, you'd have a bloodbath. And no health care to fix the bullet wounds...
I had "socialized" healthcare while I was in the military and it was just fine. If I needed healthcare, I got it. At no charge.
And could we please dispense with this mythical "family doctor" that government-dispensed health care will prevent you from seeing?
With employer-based healthcare, you end up picking a doctor from a short list of those your employer will pay for.
