Cat saves injured dog by alerting owner

A 12-year-old dog who was nearly killed by a wild coyote is alive thanks to an unlikely friend. The coyote jumped a fence at the dog's Rhode Island home, and that's when a friendly cat jumped into action.

"She’s got about seven or eight puncture wounds on her back and she’s got two wounds on either side of her neck and a couple of punctures on her right shoulder,” said Gary Paquette, Lilly's owner. Gary Paquette let the pug out into the backyard of his Middletown home around 5 a.m., and when his cat jumped on the siding door glass, he went outside to find a coyote on the attack.

"I opened the door a little bit and I could hear a struggle, so I grabbed the flashlight that was on the table and a stick and I ran out screaming my head off," said Gary Paquette. Lilly was able to walk inside and was wrapped in a blanket before her owners took her to the vet.

"We checked her over and figured out that she’s got very, very dense fur so you could tell that her back was damp and I could find some puncture wounds," said Sue Paquette. Lilly is now on antibiotics and pain medication, and her family says after the close call, Lilly will not be going out alone again.
