A fireman saved a dog's life by giving her the 'kiss of life' after she was rescued from her smoke-filled home. Mick Dunn was hailed a hero after spending 30 minutes giving Sunny, an eight-year-old mongrel, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. A neighbour in Silverdale Road, north Hull, had dialled 999 after seeing thick smoke billowing from the lounge windows.
After smashing down the front door, firefighters found Sunny on the brink of death. Mike, of Clough Road fire station, said: "The dog was handed to me outside showing little sign of life. I really thought she had perished due to the smoke, which was quite heavy. She was breathing very shallow – one breath every ten seconds.
"She needed oxygen, so I gave her mouth-to-mouth and oxygen therapy for 30 minutes." Sunny eventually found her feet and was left in the care of neighbours until her owners returned. Following the blaze, which broke out shortly before 2pm last Wednesday, Mike has asked to be kept up-to-date with Sunny's condition.
Mike said: "I was so relieved to hear she had pulled through. I am a lover of animals myself and have an eight-year-old boxer, Buster. It was a genuine team effort. "We will always do our best to save life – no matter what it is." Sunny's owners Beryl and Ken Honeyball said words could barely describe their gratitude to Mike and other crew members. Mrs Honeyball, 71, a retired shop worker, said: "Mick really is our hero. He should be given a medal for what he did."
