Yellow lines painted on pavement to show pedestrians where to walk

Passers-by in Barking watched in disbelief as offenders carrying out community service painted yellow lines straight along the pavement. The workers, doing reparation service for Barking and Dagenham Council, painted the lines on a walkway in Ripple Road, bypassing a phone box, post box and advertising board.

Postmaster Sailesh Patel, 45, said: “It just looks very silly. I don’t really know what it’s about.” A 29-year-old man from Dagenham, who did not want to be named, added: “I thought it was ridiculous. I have no idea what they’re for. It seems very odd.” Ali Korkurt, 36, of the Chubby Friar fish and chip shop, however, said: “They look pretty. I like it.”

A Department for Transport spokeswoman said: “Parking on the pavement is banned in London unless there are marked bays. It doesn’t look like these lines are being used to enforce parking.” A council spokesman said: “A number of measures have been brought in to tidy up the shopping parade near the Harrow pub.

“The lines were painted to provide a marked walkthrough for pedestrians outside the shops.” The spokesman added: “We’re going to gauge the reaction of local residents and shopkeepers over the next two to three months. Based on the views we get back, we’ll make a decision on whether to keep the lines or remove them.”

I'd like a fast and a slow lane on pavements. Especially in the likes of Oxford which is full of tourists.
