Factory workers forced to pledge not to commit suicide

Factories making Apple iPhones and iPads forced staff to sign pledges not to commit suicide before they were taken on. At least 14 workers at Apple's Chinese supplier Foxconn have killed themselves in 16 months.

And more have either survived suicide bids or were stopped from trying at plants in Chengdu and Shenzhen.

In the aftermath of the tragedies, staff seeking jobs at the giant factories were ordered to make written promises not to follow suit.

They even had to vow that if they did, their families would not claim more than the legal minimum in damages. One executive accused victims of committing suicide to win compensation payouts for relatives.

They must be paying them peanuts, if it's more lucrative to kill yourself than actually work.

Or the work conditions are breaking them but quitting is not an option. The only way to get away without dooming your family to starvation is to kill yourself. Brutal.

Hope the Apple fanboys and fangirls catch a read on this one -- and give some serious thought to the human suffering that goes on so they can be hipsters.

WordyGrrl: Foxconn manufacture a lot more than just hipster accessories. Open just about any computer and you'll see a bunch of components branded Foxconn, even the cable connectors. They've got contracts with Apple, Dell, Acer, Amazon, Asus, Intel, Cisco, HP, Nintendo to name but a few.
