Mass circumcision party held for hundreds of boys in the Philippines

Preteen Filippino boys queued in their hundreds for a daylong 'circumcision party', which officials hope will earn their city a place in the record books, as doctors carried out the surgery on dozens of makeshift operating tables in a stadium in Marikina city, east of Manila.

In the Philippines, circumcision is a rite of passage most males undergo as preteens. Young Filippino boys are traditionally circumcised during their school summer break from March to May.

Officials said the event, touted in a press statement as a 'circumcision party', aimed to promote safe circumcision. They offered poor residents free surgery that would otherwise cost at least $40 (£25) in private hospitals. In rural areas, the surgery is sometimes performed by non-doctors using crude methods.

Marikina city officials hope to establish a world record for the number of people attending a mass circumcision. The vice mayor, Jose Fabian Cadiz, said: 'We applied for the Guinness Book of World Records and we are recording everything so we can send all the data to them and hopefully it will be recognized.'

First the looks of glee, then the looks of violation.

So God made man in his own image.
Holy Man then sliced a little bit extra off. Why?

Will someone teach these people to wash? You don't need to go chopping bits off unless it's become infected.

Gotta love that poster though. It's a hell of a selling point :)

I have a million nerve endings in mine, why would anyone deny their son that pleasure. I dont believe in god or fairies, but evolution put it there, just like it did on my dog, must be a bloody good reason. I will never, never ever, circumcise my dog. Amazing how stupid some people are.

Dogs get circumcised?

As the article says, the reason is cultural and not religous (as far as i can tell), it most likely originates for health reasons.

@L It would be ILLEGAL to circumcise a dog.

@E Under the conditions prevailing when it began, it would have been much more unhealthy to do it than not to. No, it began for some kind of magical reasons. It was introduced to the Phillipines by Muslims, but they've forgotten that, and their Catholic Catechism: (Item 2297: Respect for bodily integrity
... Except when performed for strictly therapeutic medical reasons, directly intended amputations, mutilations, and sterilizations performed on innocent persons are against the moral law.)

And as far as the record goes, they wasted their time. The Guinness Book won't accept it.

I wonder if anyone at the event, at any time, stopped for a second to think: "What on Earth are we doing? And why, exactly?". That's messed up, makes me dislike humanity.

Also, calling that a party is grotesque.
