A number of beauticians hoping for work were left disappointed when it turned out the role they applied for was counting builders' nails. Dozens of people applied for the nail technician role advertised in the Sentinel newspaper, however, the local builder was looking for someone to sort through and organise excess stock, rather than a trained beautician to perform manicures and other treatments.
A wide range of applicants put their name forward for the position, some with as much as seven years experience in the beauty industry. However, people could be forgiven for being confused by the ad, which read: 'Good rates of pay and flexible working hours on offer. Previous nail experience preferable but not essential.'
A spokesperson for LocalTraders.com, which placed the advert, said the dual meaning of the word nail did not occur to them at first, however, the error soon became clear when the applications came pouring in. 'A few emails came in from young women and initially we thought nothing of it.
'However, when more and more came in we realised the advert might have been misunderstood. It was a very specific advert for what is fair to say is quite a unique role.' He added that lots of people took time to put their applications for the position together, and the company apologises for any inconvenience.
