Cat survives van hit and then being dragged seven miles

Maisie the miracle cat was run over by a van then clung to it for seven miles with a broken leg as it was driven along. Now she's back home, and doing well, after her amazing brush with death. Maisie's ordeal began when she was hit by a council van near her home in Kirkcaldy, Fife.

The driver got out to look for her but couldn't see her. Maisie didn't emerge until some time later, when the van was seven miles away in Burntisland. Owner Ronnie Stuart, 58, said: "I can't believe she was able to hang on that long. We knew she could go quite far - but this was just unbelievable.

"When we asked the woman what had happened, they told us they'd hit a cat not far from our house, and Maisie crawled out from underneath the van when they got to Burntisland. Maisie was in shock when we got there, hiding up against the wall of a bank." Ronnie and wife Alana couldn't bring themselves to have 16-month-old Maisie's broken hind leg amputated. So they decided to have it surgically repaired, even though the vets' bills have now risen to £3000.

"It might mean no holiday next year," Ronnie admitted. "But we're animal lovers and there was no other choice really. Maisie's doing really well. She has pins through her leg into the bone but that isn't stopping her trying to jump fences. Despite all that's happened, I don't think she'll have learned her lesson." Maisie will have pins in her leg for a few more weeks but will get her stitches out this weekend. She's expected to make a full recovery.
