Kitten survives 50-minute spin in washing machine

A tiny kitten got a little more adventure than she bargained for when she went exploring in the kitchen of her new home. Princess, an eight-week old kitten from Aberdeen, jumped inside the washing machine when her owners back was turned and ended up going round in circles for 50 minutes, along with a load of laundry.

Princess’ owner, Susan Gordon, assumed that her kitten was safely in another room but was horrified to find a very bedraggled Princess emerge from the washing machine clinging to a pair of jeans at the end of the cycle. Mrs Gordon immediately rushed the water-logged kitten to the vet where she was given emergency treatment.

Judy Drysdale, senior veterinary surgeon at Vets Now, said: "Princess arrived at the clinic on Friday night very shaken up and shivering, with a nose bleed and sore eyes but her owner had managed to dry her off very well prior to bringing her in to the clinic. Princess was admitted to the hospital for emergency care which included oxygen, IV fluids, diuretics to remove the water from her lungs, plus lubrication for her soap damaged eyes, and importantly pain relief for her bruised body.

"She was also placed on heat pads to bring her core temperature up to normal. By Sunday afternoon following treatment, she was purring and eating as normal and behaving as a young kitten does." She did not suffer any permanent damaged and was allowed home after three days. Vet Ann Wortley said: "Princess was very lucky to have survived her ordeal with no serious injuries. Thankfully she is safe and well - however I think she has certainly used up at least one of her nine lives."
