Three fire appliances, including two from Invercargill and one from Kingswell, were called out to the Boys' High hostel at about 9.15am after excessive deodorant spray set off the smoke alarm.
Invercargill station officer Colin Russell said the Fire Service had been called out for the same reason several times in the past few years and occurred when deodorant particles became so thick around smoke detectors it was recognised as smoke. "They [the boys] get carried away with the deodorant ... I imagine it would get quite whiffy in there at times," he said.
Fire Service Southland area manager Julian Tohiariki said the problem was quite common in hostels across Southland and it could become quite costly. Each business got two free fire callouts each year, but subsequent calls could attract the cost of $1000, he said.

I was walking through the perfume department of my local department store last week when I passed a group of teenage school boys. The overpowering cloud of cheap spray on deodorant was strong and distinctive even there in the saturated air of that department. It felt like a bubble I entered and exited.
