Hotel owner finds Chinese family's rabbit in shower

A hotel owner was shocked to discover a rabbit complete with hay, bedding and food in her Chinese guests' shower. Patricia O'Donnell, who runs the Armadillo guesthouse in Edinburgh, "almost had a heart attack" when she discovered the uninvited visitor over the weekend. She had entered the room of a family of Chinese tourists to water the flower boxes when she spotted a bunny - complete with hay, bedding and food - relaxing in the shower unit.

She ended up spilling the jug of water all over herself in the shock of the incident, and said it was the strangest thing she had seen in 20 years of running the guesthouse. Ms O'Donnell believes the family smuggled the rabbit upstairs in a suitcase. She said: "The family - a mum, dad and daughter - checked in and about an hour later went out to visit the castle. I thought I'd better go and water the window boxes, but when I got to their door there was a 'do not disturb' notice on the handle.

"That was odd because they'd only been there a short time, so I got the jug of water, went into the bathroom and almost died when I saw this rabbit. I got such a fright the water went all over me." Seeing that the grey-coloured animal was shaking and uncomfortable, she called the SSPCA, who attended shortly afterwards. "They were pretty shocked as well," she added. "My fear was that the Chinese family had travelled up from Leicester and there wasn't any obvious sign of how they would have taken this rabbit.

"But when they returned they produced a small cage. The officer told them to take the rabbit to Gorgie City Farm, but they didn't seem interested in that. The mother said that most guesthouses allow animals. Maybe we'd allow dogs or cats but not for somebody to keep a rabbit in the bathroom. They absolutely stink, and I ended up spending most of the next day trying to get rid of the small." She then asked the trio to leave the seven-room guest house, which they did with minimum fuss.

So she went in despite a do not disturb sign to discover an animal someone had given food and bedding to, kept in a place which could easily be cleaned. Terrible.

The ignoring of the 'do not disturb' sign was what I found the most disturbing as well.

I'm with you two. She was just being nosy. If the plants were in dire need of water then she should have taken care of it before they arrived.

Yes. She's a terrible host, and she's nosy as heck. The rabbit looks to have been well cared-for; why would she call the SSPCA? I wonder if she'd have reacted the same way if the family had not been Chinese? Their ethnicity is mentioned numerous times in the article.

What a biatch. Can you imagine if she found something else she didnt like and she called the police? Or Porn and she called Child Services (if you were travelling with children).

And rabbits do not stink. Rabbits are the most clean animals, and I should know I have 6 free range bunnies in my home....they are constantly grooming themselves and each other....they smell like coriander when you give them a cuddle.
And, yes thats trespass.

Yes the woman was nosy "I thought I'd better go and water the window boxes", yes, an hour after they'd checked in the flowers really needed watered....

However, what the heck is someone doing bringing their pet rabbit with them on holiday to Edinburgh!?! Rabbit poo in the shower stall, yuck, wouldn't like to have been the next person staying there.
