Staff at a Wokingham charity shop were given a bit of a surprise when they sorted through a bag of donations and found an unusual item moving inside. The team at Oxfam in Peach Street were pulling toys from a bag of unwanted items, when they came across a live hedgehog nestled at the bottom.
Manager Claire Mingham-Smith, said: “I was sorting through some bags of donations when I discovered a live hedgehog nestled in a bag of soft toys. “We can only sell soft toys with the CE safety label attached so I was having to throw some very old toys away. Luckily I checked the bottom of the bag and was amazed to discover a live hedgehog.
“It was obviously frightened and curled in a ball but after a few minutes in a nice quiet box it uncurled and we could see it was uninjured.” Staff put a bowl of water into the box for the hedgehog and volunteer Sue Farrington took it home at the end of the day to release it into her garden.
Ms Mingham-Smith said: “Sue reported that it tucked into a meal of cat food later and seemed unperturbed by its ordeal. The people of Wokingham are very generous and we received a great variety of donations but this was the most unusual yet!”
